What to expect when you are posted for a surgery

update image

When you are posted for surgery, understanding the process can help alleviate anxiety. The journey begins with a pre-surgery consultation, where your surgeon explains the procedure, any potential risks, and answers your questions. They will also perform necessary tests to ensure you’re fit for surgery, which may include blood tests, an ECG, or imaging scans. A pre anaesthetic checkup for anaesthesia fitness is done on the day of surgery or a day prior.

On the day of the surgery, you will change into a surgical gown and be given an IV line for fluids and medications. The medical team will prepare you for anesthesia, which will ensure that you’re asleep during the procedure. The surgeon will mark the area of surgery to prevent errors.

Once under anesthesia, the surgeon will perform the surgery. Depending on the type of surgery, this could be done with traditional open methods or using minimally invasive techniques, such as laparoscopy or robotic surgery. The anaesthesia team will carefully monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure.

After surgery, you’ll be taken to the recovery room where the nursing staff will monitor you as you wake up. You may feel groggy from the anesthesia, but that’s normal. You’ll be offered pain management options and, depending on the procedure, either discharged or moved to a recovery room.
