Rectal Polyps: Symptoms and Surgery: Best Colorectal Surgeon in Thane
As a Surgical Gastroenterologist, I've seen many patients with rectal polyps. But what are rectal polyps, and how are they treated?
What Are Rectal Polyps?
Rectal polyps are growths that occur on the lining of the rectum, which is the last part of the large intestine. They are usually benign (non-cancerous), but some types can become cancerous over time.
Types Of Rectal Polyps
- Hyperplastic Polyps: non-cancerous and usually small
- Adenomatous Polyps: can become cancerous over time
- Villous Adenomas: have a higher risk of becoming cancerous
- Serrated Polyps: can become cancerous, especially if large
Symptoms Of Rectal Polyps
- Rectal Bleeding: blood in the stool or black stools
- Abdominal Pain: cramping or discomfort in the abdomen
- Changes in Bowel Movements: diarrhea or constipation
- Mucus in the Stool: excessive mucus in the stool
Diagnosis Of Rectal Polyps
- Colonoscopy: a flexible tube with a camera is inserted into the rectum to visualize the polyps
- Biopsy: a sample of tissue is taken from the polyp for examination
- Imaging Tests: X-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans may be used to evaluate the polyp
Surgical Treatment Of Rectal Polyps
- Polypectomy: removal of the polyp during a colonoscopy
- Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR): removal of larger polyps using a specialized endoscope
- Laparoscopic Surgery: minimally invasive surgery to remove the polyp or a portion of the rectum
- Open Surgery: traditional open surgery to remove the polyp or a portion of the rectum
When To Seek Surgical Help
- Bleeding that doesn't stop: heavy or persistent bleeding from the rectum
- Severe abdominal pain: severe cramping or discomfort in the abdomen
- Changes in bowel movements: persistent diarrhea or constipation
- Large polyps: polyps that are large or have a high risk of becoming cancerous
